The Curves of Life, 2006

(American, born 1948)

Location: Spokane Community College, Spokane

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Liz Mapelli based The Curves of Life on the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Spiral. The artwork is a terrazzo floor design that includes images of nature where these geometric patterns are found, such as a snowflake or a pine cone. The Fibonacci sequence is a pattern of numbers where each number is found by adding up the two numbers before it. A golden spiral is a logarithmic spiral that gets wider for every quarter turn it makes. These geometric patterns are also connected to the artwork's location in the Science Building at Spokane Community College.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Spokane Community College.
