Black Gold, 2003

Donald Fels
(American, born 1946)

Location: University of Washington - Tacoma

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Donald Fels fashioned this painting after Indian cinema billboards, honoring Indian pop culture while referring to the complicated history of colonialism. Portuguese explorer (or "invader" as the artwork proposes) Vasco da Gama, the first European to arrive in India by sea, is shown as the "movie's" central character.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University of Washington.
