ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Hung Liu's "Sisters in Arms II" is inspired by historical photographs of Chinese people, and incorporates both ancient Chinese design elements, such as calligraphy, and modern print techniques.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University of Washington.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chinese-American artist Hung Liu was born in Changchun, China and studied painting at the Central Academy for Fine Art in Beijing. She immigrated to the United States in 1984 to attend the University of California, San Diego. Her figurative paintings derive imagery from vintage chinese photographs to explore themes of identity, memory, and history.
