Yancy Wright
(American, born 1975)

Location: Spokane Readiness Center, Spokane

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Each image in this series depicts the work of the National Guard at the Bremerton Readiness Center on the Kitsap Peninsula, on Puget Sound in Western Washington. Artist Yancy Wright's photographs contrast nature with the equipment used in combat. Yancy's artworks are created by layering photographs and do not involve any digital manipulation. All of the original photographs were taken within the state of Washington. The layering of photography reflects the subtle layers of interpretation, perception, and bias that shape our world-views.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Military Department Spokane Readiness Center.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Yancy Wright is a Seattle-based photographer. His works examine the tension between natural and built worlds. He notes, "Photography allows me to capture, through layering, my perception of a particular place or idea and ask questions through the subtle juxtaposition of two images." He received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Idaho in 1999. He received a Master of Architecture degree in Rome, Italy in 2001.
