Yancy Wright
(American, born 1975)

Location: Bremerton National Guard Readiness Center, Bremerton

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This layered, illuminated photograph by Yancy Wright connects past and present. Created for the Bremerton National Guard Readiness Center, the artwork includes images of the Guard overlapping with the Kitsap Peninsula as seen from Seattle. Historic images of Sinclair Park—an African-American neighborhood that was formerly on the Readiness Center's site—are etched on the artist-made frame. Sinclair Park was established in Bremerton in the 1940s to support African-American workers at the local shipyards.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Military Department.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Yancy Wright is a Seattle-based photographer. His works examine the tension between natural and built worlds. He notes, "Photography allows me to capture, through layering, my perception of a particular place or idea and ask questions through the subtle juxtaposition of two images." He received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Idaho in 1999. He received a Master of Architecture degree in Rome, Italy in 2001.
