ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Robert Irwin's "9 Spaces 9 Trees" was originally created for the City of Seattle's Public Safety Building. After construction and plans for a future redesign of the site necessitated its permanent removal, it was reconceived by the artist for the University of Washington's campus. The work's maze-like construction defines nine gathering spaces that, when light passes through, create a sense of movement and moiré patterns.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University of Washington.
