Storm Patterns, 2008

Gloria Bornstein
(American, born 1937)

Location: City of Monroe, Monroe

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Gloria Bornstein created this sculpture of clouds and stormy weather to connect viewers to the ecology of their community. The artwork is located in the city of Monroe, next to Lake Tye, a storm water retention pond used for recreational activities such as fishing, cycling, and walking. Bornstein noticed that “The sky is big over Lake Tye where you can slow down and watch the clouds and eagles.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Department of Corrections and City of Monroe.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Listening to stories and interacting with communities tie together Gloria Bornstein’s artworks and public art over more than four decades. She calls her art “visual poetry where textual and visual elements are interwoven”. Her artworks range from performance art and installations, to artist books, to sculptures and public art.

Born in the Bronx, NY, Gloria Bornstein attended Hunter College and received an MA in Psychology from Antioch University (1979). She taught performance at Cornish College in Seattle from 1979-81, and she taught sculpture and public art at the University of Washington from 1991-2005. She also practiced psychotherapy during that time.
