Woven to Place, 2011

Susan Point
(Canadian | Musqueam, born 1952)

Location: Green River College, Auburn

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Coast Salish artist Susan Point's Woven to Place artwork includes painted forest imagery and cedar panels that imitate the weaving form of Salish basketry found in the Northwest. The artist states, "Green River College is a place of learning, and of sharing knowledge. The natural environment is a key element of what makes the location so special. There is a real sense of connection to nature; a reminder of how it should be everywhere on the Northwest Coast." Our connection to what we do and where we do it is important and intertwined like the weaving motif of this large site-specific artwork. Salish Hall, where the artwork is located, is one of Green River College's newest buildings and its name honors the native people of the Pacific Northwest.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Green River Community College.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Susan Point is a celebrated First Nations Musqueam artist working in the Coast Salish tradition of her ancestors. She creates fine art and public sculptural artworks in a variety of media. The use of her ancestral visual language is complemented by contemporary concepts, non traditional materials, and innovative design elements. She notes, "Coast Salish art has forever been a way to honour and remember significant details of our social lives. My hope is that my children remember to tell not only our cultural accounts, but also their own stories as well."
